The cost of a medication abortion can vary depending on the provider, method of care, insurance coverage, and other factors. Before you decide to take the abortion pill, it’s crucial to understand all the facts. Keep reading to learn more about the cost of the abortion pill and what you need to know.
Does Insurance Cover the Abortion Pill?
Insurance coverage for abortion varies depending on the type of insurance, state law, and individual plan. Texas restricts abortion coverage in many private health insurance plans, subject to certain exceptions.[1]
It’s also important to know that Texas currently prohibits abortion in most circumstances, with an exception for certain life-threatening physical conditions or serious risks of substantial impairment of a major bodily function.[2] Texas law states that the pregnant woman on whom an abortion is performed, induced, or attempted may not be held criminally, civilly, or administratively liable under that chapter.[2]
How Much Does the Abortion Pill Cost Without Insurance?
The cost of medication abortion varies depending on where and how the medication is obtained.
The most recently available national data found that the median self-pay cost for a medication abortion at abortion-providing facilities was $563 in 2023.[3] Costs can vary considerably depending on the provider and method of care.
Additional Costs to Consider
Like any medication or medical procedure, the abortion pill carries risks and potential side effects that could require follow-up medical care. Additional costs could include treatment related to complications such as:
- Heavy bleeding: Bleeding and cramping are expected with the abortion pill, but very heavy bleeding can require medical attention.[4]
- Incomplete abortion: In some cases, the pregnancy may not be completely expelled, and additional medical treatment may be required.[5]
- Infection: Serious infection is an uncommon but possible complication that requires medical attention.[4]
What Should I Do Before Taking the Abortion Pill?
We understand that facing an unplanned pregnancy can be scary. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, but you’re not alone, and it’s important to make an informed decision.
Before taking the abortion pill, speak with a qualified healthcare professional about your pregnancy and whether the medication is appropriate for your circumstances.
Why Get an Ultrasound?
You may be wondering why an ultrasound could be useful if you’re considering the abortion pill.
An ultrasound can provide important information about your pregnancy, including:
- How far along am I? An ultrasound can provide information about gestational age. The FDA-approved mifepristone regimen is approved to end an intrauterine pregnancy through 10 weeks of gestation, or 70 days or less since the first day of your last menstrual period.[6]
- Where is the pregnancy located? An ultrasound can help determine whether a pregnancy is located inside the uterus. The abortion pill should not be used in cases of confirmed or suspected ectopic pregnancy.[6]
Metroplex Women’s Clinic provides free ultrasounds to women who receive positive pregnancy tests at our center. Call us at (817) 299-9599 today to see if you qualify.
Important Note: Please be aware that this article is not meant to substitute for medical advice or treatment. The purpose of our limited ultrasound exams is to identify a pregnancy inside the uterus, detect the fetal heartbeat, and estimate how far along you are. If there is no detectable heartbeat, it may indicate a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy is occurring. If we cannot detect a fetal heartbeat during your appointment, we will provide appropriate referrals for follow-up care and treatment.
